Every match is a run chase. You have a target, a set number of overs and wickets in hand. Formats run from a five-over sprint up to a full ODI, and each one reveals the next delivery a little later than the last — longer matches are harder to read, not just longer.
Ten batsmen, each with their own role and scoring curve. Levelling one up widens the odds in your favour and reveals more deliveries before they arrive. Your top order faces most of the innings, so that is where investment pays.
